GD : Plan What to Code – Part 2, How to have a Source and Version Control for your Project?

November 10th, 2008 Jithin Rao No comments

It’s always better that before you start coding make arrangements to backup your codes with a perfect version control on each stable build that you code down. I am used a couple of SVN and code repositories but for an open project like this one, I wanted to depend on only the free tools possible to keep it handy, free of cost and useful for the public reading this blog.

For the source repository, I have created an account in Bounty Source, which is an free online repository for the open source projects. Creating an account there is like a breeze just follow the instructions on the site and you can get thru quickly.

Once you get an account in Bounty Source, you need to create a project of your own to intiate a web space for your project. This is where the sources that you upload will come and backs up. Bounty Source also has the feature for adding a wiki page for you project, adding more members to the project, bug reporting, etc. For more info visit the site.

When your repository space is ready its time to setup your SVN Client ready to upload. I am using TortoiseSVN for this purpose, as I feel thats the simplest and most efficient free SVN Client.

After you install your SVN Client, all you need to do is right click on your project folder, select the “SVN Checkout” option, it leads to a window where you need to point your repository address so that TortoiseSVN sets that this folder updations would be mapped to the online repository.

Right Click On The Project Folder to Select the SVN Checkout Option
Right Click On The Project Folder to Select the SVN Checkout Option
SVN Checkout Window

By Default the URL of any repositories in Bounty Source is : https://svn.bountysource.com/<YOUR PROJECT NAME>/trunk ** . Please make sure that the Checkout Directory is your Project Folder itself. To view the repository and its file/folders you can directly goto https://<YOUR PROJECT NAME>.bountysource.com/svn **.

**Your Project Name is decided when you create the repository at Bounty Source, make sure you use the same name thru out the procedure.

Once the folders are intially created in your repository, the client is now ready to upload your projects. Whatever files are maintained in the Checkout Directory can be uploaded or revised to the Repository by just right clicking the Project Solution Folder and opting for “SVN Commit“.

Once you hit the OK button here, the upload starts untill all the files in the folder are uploaded. And there you have your Client and repository done.

Each time you have a stable build, you just have to right click the folder and “SVN Commit” to have a revised version of the project in your repository.

There are more options for the SVN Client :

Right Click Without Shift
Right Click Without Shift
Right Click With Shift

For more info on the options please check TortoiseSVN site.

THERE! We have our Source and Version Control Done for the Project!

HAPPY SVNING ! CHEERS!!!

GR : Kongregate – A site with a lot of innovative games!

November 9th, 2008 Jithin Rao No comments

Widely considered one of the best places for aspiring gamers to hang out, Kongregate has been called the YouTube of the online game world. It brings together game players and game developers at a site featuring thousands of free games, as well as a broad range of community-building features such as forums, feedback, user-rating mechanisms, profile pages, and private messaging capabilities. Developers upload their games to the site, and Kongregate shares advertising revenue with them while allowing them to retain 100% ownership of their intellectual property.

Kongregate

What really distinguishes us from other sites is our community,” said Jim Greer, CEO of Kongregate. As the fourth-biggest Web games site in the world, Kongregate currently has more than 3,000 developers who have contributed 8,500 games — a number that is growing at the rate of 850 new games per month. “If you have an exciting game, our members will recognize it, and reward you,” said Greer.

Unlike other game sites, which offer developers a one-time licensing fee — usually quite low — Kongregate provides developers with the opportunity to get their games in front of a large audience and get valuable feedback in the form of user ratings and comments. At the same time, they share in advertising revenue for the site. “We help them build audiences through establishing achievement milestones and scores for users, which gets the users rather obsessively involved in trying new games by new developers,” said Greer.

Anyways for we game developers, inspirations on the creativity that can be used on games to bring in the fun factor to the games are always welcome!

CHEERS!
